Some watches are big for the sake of being big. Other then a large diameter they have very little to offer. There is, however, a category of watches that not only uses all the real estate they have available, but they also need it! They feature movements that fill the case and require large dials to show a multitude of complications in a fashionable order. They are the behemoths of the Haute Horlogerie, and they are large for a good reason!

Recently we already discussed how the tourbillon turned from a relatively obscure device to increase the precision of a watch or clock, to the favorite complication of collectors. Nowadays there is a wide variety of different tourbillons, but in this article, we are exploring the most traditional configuration, the one in which the back of the tourbillon is secured on the main plate, with a bridge securing the front.

Our watch of the week is actually a series of watches, as Vacheron Constantin took everybody's breath away last SIHH by introducing five versions of the Métiers d'Art Les Aérostiers. With the release of a reverse 'Panda-dial' version did Vacheron Constantin's sportiest watch, the Overseas Chronograph, just got a whole lot...sportier. This watch once again proves what a difference a dial can make! While the Overseas has already twenty years a firm place in Vacheron Constantin collection, the current generation didn't arrive until 2016. In comparison to previous versions, it made the Overseas more contemporary in its styling, and with the new reverse 'Panda-dial' does Vacheron Constantin extend this feeling even further.

Last year after Baselworld I wrote an article about the many beautiful blue dials that caught my eye. This trend continues to live on, as also at this years SIHH, there where blue dials galore, including some very special one!

It is not uncommon to remake something decades after it was first launched....at least, in the car world. Aston Martin did it not too long ago with the DB4GT, and Jaguar just announced that it will make another 25 D-Types, which they stopped producing in 1956. In the watch world, this is a bit more uncommon, yet Vacheron Constantin did something similar with this chronograph in 1990, at the request of a client.

Vacheron Constantin is not just releasing just a few new models this edition of the SIHH, but an entire array of complicated masterpieces! It starts with a whole new collection, the FIFTYSIX, which is inspired on Vacheron Constantin's reference 6073, which the brand launched in 1956. Elegant yet masculine lines envoke the style of this era, and transform it into the 21st century. The FIFTYSIX will be available in three different varieties, a date model, one featuring day of the week, date, power-reserve indicator, and the final version features a complete calendar with precision moon phase.

2017 was a good year when it comes to watches. As we already discovered a few of Haute Time's favorite watches of this year in Part I, there were simply too many to put all in one article. That's, why in part II we showcase a few other favorites that have been released this year!

It is not every day that Vacheron Constantin introduces a new model, let alone three! For all of them, the brand found inspiration in the rich past of the brand.

Asking to pick four favorite Vacheron Constantin from their vast collection is much like putting a kid in a candy store, and letting it pick only four of all the candy it is surrounded by. Tough job, but these four stand out, although all for different reasons!

It is somewhat of a contradiction: to create a complicated watch, and then make it look as simple and understated as possible. This not only requires technical prowess, but also quite a bit of skill from the designers, as nothing is as difficult as making a complicated watch look simple, yet these four watches do just that!
