Throwback Thursday: Omega Speedmaster Ref.2915 ‘Broad Arrow’

The Speedmaster is, without a doubt, one of the most important and recognizable watches in the history of Omega. However, when this particular Ref.2915 was made in 1958, its true claim to fame was still in the future. That didn't make the Speedmaster any less innovative when it was launched. It was the very first chronograph that had the tachymeter scale engraved on the bezel rather than printed on the dial. This increased the legibility of all the functions and was one of the reasons many professionals embraced it. This would later even include NASA, where one of the successors of this model would make history as the first watch worn on the moon.

Four Chronographs That Earned their Place In History

One of the most popular complications is the chronograph. This can be explained because the complication adds extra dynamic elements to the watch. Measuring the passing of time requires an extra seconds hand, subdials to show the minutes and hours, and pushers to operate it all. Aviation, car racing, and the exploration of space are just three areas in which (mechanical) chronographs made their mark, adding to their appeal. While there are a great many to choose from, the following four have earned their place in history:

Going For Gold: Omega At The Tokyo Olympics

What should have been the Olympic Summer games of 2020, was unfortunately delayed a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. While it remains an edition unlike any other, Tokyo proves to be a gracious host to top-athletes from around the world that are going for gold. Another participant is Omega, acting as the official timekeeper for the 29th time. It started in Los Angeles in 1932, where Omega was the first watch brand responsible for the timekeeping of the entire event. While it was still mechanical stopwatches that determined the winner back then, strides were made to increase accuracy. In 1948 at the Olympic Games in London, Omega introduced the first photo-finish camera and a photoelectric cell that electronically stopped the time as soon as an athlete passed it.

Throwback Thursday: Omega Speedmaster Alaska I Prototype

Omega's involvement with the space program has always been a passionate one. While they had little involvement in becoming part of it, other than making an excellent chronograph that was the only one that passed all the NASA testing, they became a valuable partner to the space agency soon after. Omega wasn't sitting by the sideline, just supplying its watches to astronauts, but further developed its timepieces particularly to meet new demands as the space program evolved. The "Alaska project" is the perfect example of this.
