Panerai has something to celebrate this year, as it is 70 years ago that the Luminor was first created. While initially developed for military divers, it has grown to become one of the most iconic and loved sports watches. Among its fans is Panerai-ambassador and World Champion free diving Guillaume Néry. With the new Luminor Marina 44mm Guillaume Néry Edition does the French diver continue his close collaboration with Panerai, which in the recent past also resulted in two stunning Submersible Chronographs.

Today Michel Parmigiani is celebrating his 70th birthday. Born in the Swiss canton of Neuchatel, he developed a passion for watchmaking at a very early age. His career choice was obvious, but the path he followed was clearly against the stream. Parmigiani already showed great promise at the Val-de-Travers watchmaking school. This allowed him to start his career in one of the most demanding fields of watchmaking; restauration.

Roger Dubuis is shaping their future of 'Hyper Horlogerie' further with the spectacular Excalibur Blacklight. The two watches that the brand is launching under this name are inspired by the neon lights that light up the night in many major cities, particularly Hong Kong. To achieve this, Roger Dubuis teamed up with Wu Chi Kai, one of the last neon masters of this city, to give these watches a unique and colorful twist.

This year, it was 160 years ago that the founder of (Grand) Seiko was born in central Tokyo. Kintaro Hattori was a visionary who recognized that Japan's rapid modernization and its increasingly outward focus to the rest of the world was an opportune time to found a company of his own. He did so in 1881, at the age of 21, focussing initially on importing timepieces, but later would start producing them himself. With this, he laid the foundation for one of the most formidable brands in watchmaking.

Especially in watchmaking, details make a difference. Zenith is a brand that has always had a great understanding of this, which they also underscore with the new Chronomaster Revival Liberty. This watch is exclusive to the North American market, and Zenith will only make 150 pieces of them.

The days that a watch would be available with either a black or a silver dial are long gone. Color is the new credo, as many brands now release watches in a rainbow of different hues. Recently, the colorful dials of the new Oyster Perpetual 41 even eclipsed the news of the revised Submariner. Blancpain and Jaeger-LeCoultre also offer a colorful take on existing favorites as they launch their new models.

Recognizing a tourbillon is often relatively easy, as most brands proudly showcase this regulating device. They do this by either leaving an opening on the dial side or even skeletonizing the entire movement. For their latest creating did Glashütte Original take another road, as the only indication on the front of the watch that is fitted with such a device is the word tourbillon in the sub-seconds display at six o'clock. This is all the more exceptional, as Glashütte Original created this watch to mark the 100th anniversary of the flying tourbillon, which was created by one of Glashütte's most famous watchmakers; Alfred Helwig.

Hublot is no stranger to donning its watches in camouflage. In 2009 they used these distinct patterns on the Big Bang Commando, and the second collaboration with Italia Independent gave a new and innovative twist to camouflage. More recently, we also saw the exquisite Big Bang Unico Sorai, which was dedicated to raising funds to protect the rhino, highlighting this pattern. With the Big Bang Camo Yohji Yamamoto is Hublot releasing its second collaboration with one of Japanese most iconic fashion designers, and for him, camouflage has a significant meaning.

This year The Formula 1 World Championship is celebrating its 70th anniversary, but it is not the only milestone on the list in 2020. Upcoming weekend, Ferrari will take part in their 1000th Grand Prix, an event that underscores the importance of Ferrari in Formula 1, as well as vice versa. The fact that the race takes place at the Mugello circuit in Ferrari's home country of Italy is the icing on the cake.

Platinum has the reputation of being the most prized of all the precious metals. In luxury watchmaking, it is often only used for top-of-the-line models. Here they often create a contradiction, as the appearance of polished platinum is rather understated. There was a time, not so long ago, when green was a rare color to encounter on a watch. Now it seems to follow firmly into the footsteps of blue. This color was once a bold statement next to black and silver dialed watches but has now become another staple. In the past few years, we have seen many more watches that feature green dials and details. Will this color now become a common option, instead of a trend, especially now also TAG Heuer and Blancpain launch new watches featuring it so prominently?
