Grand Seiko Ushers In The New Year Early With Two New Timepieces

Just ahead of the holiday season, Grand Seiko dropped a little treasure: two new additions to the Elegance Collection. The SBGW301 pays homage to a timeless Grand Seiko model, while the SBGW305 boasts a silver dial and a distinctive multi-row bracelet. And while at first glance, these two timepieces seem incredibly minimalistic (especially within the smooth-texture dials, a rarity for Grand Seiko), in true Grand Seiko fashion, their stories transcend beyond the dial.

The SBGW301 is a revival of the iconic SBGW001, which traces its roots back to 2001. Originally launched when Grand Seiko gained recognition as an independent brand, this manual-winding watch experienced a resurgence in 2017 as the SBGW231. Now, it re-emerges as the SBGW301 with an enhanced case and crystal construction for improved serviceability.

On the other hand, the SBGW305 stands out with its silver-colored dial and an elegant multi-row bracelet, reminiscent of the former Japan domestic model, reference SBGW235. This watch draws inspiration from the classic round manual wristwatch design with an ivory-toned dial, a theme that has been an integral part of the Grand Seiko lineup since the introduction of Caliber 9S. While not a direct replica, the SBGW001 and now the SBGW301 capture the essence that made the original 1960 model so captivating.

Encased within the 37.3 x 11.7mm Zaratsu-polished case of both models is the Caliber 9S64, a manually wound mechanical movement with central seconds, operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour. With a remarkable 72-hour power reserve, these watches can comfortably go through a weekend without winding, maintaining an accuracy of +5 to -3 seconds per day. The exhibition case backs reveal the large gear train bridge of the 9S64 movement, combining strength and aesthetics to complement the dial’s diamond-cut hands and indexes.

Adding to the vintage appeal, each watch features a box-shaped sapphire crystal, reminiscent of mid-century aesthetics and classic acrylic crystals. This design choice adds an extra layer of charm to these watches.

The SBGW305, priced at $5,500, will be available from early December, while the SBGW301, priced at $4,800, will follow in early January 2024.
