Grand Seiko is a Japanese luxury watch brand launched in 1960 as Seiko's highest-precision line and operated as a standalone brand since 2017. It builds three complete movement families in-house: the 9S mechanical series including the 36,000vph Hi-Beat, the 9R Spring Drive series with its glide-motion seconds hand and no escapement, and the 9F high-accuracy quartz. Watches are assembled at the Shizukuishi studio in Iwate and the Shinshu studio in Nagano, and cases are finished by Zaratsu blade polishing that produces a distortion-free mirror surface.

Milestones

1960
The first Grand Seiko is built to beat the chronometer standards of the day.
1968
The 61GS Hi-Beat runs at 36,000 vibrations per hour, a rate few Swiss houses attempted.
1999
Spring Drive is completed - a mechanical mainspring regulated electronically, with a truly gliding seconds hand.
2017
Grand Seiko separates from Seiko and becomes a standalone brand worldwide.

Frequently Asked

What is Spring Drive?
A movement powered entirely by a mainspring, but regulated by a quartz oscillator and electromagnetic brake instead of an escapement. There is no ticking and no battery - the seconds hand glides continuously, and accuracy is about one second a day.
Is Grand Seiko the same as Seiko?
Not since 2017. Grand Seiko began in 1960 as Seiko's top line and now operates as its own brand with its own boutiques, studios and movement families, though it remains owned by Seiko Group Corporation.
What is Zaratsu polishing?
A hand-held blade polishing technique using a rotating tin plate. It produces a perfectly flat, distortion-free mirror finish on case surfaces - the crisp light-and-shadow contrast that identifies a Grand Seiko case at a glance.
Where can I read Grand Seiko reviews from a watch publication?
Haute Time has published more than 100 Grand Seiko stories, covering Spring Drive and Hi-Beat launches, limited editions and the brand's move to standalone status.
