Louis Vuitton’s Tambour Convergence Mirror Steel Makes Polished Steel Tough Enough for Every Day

A patented hardened steel, a scalloped guichet, and the in-house caliber LFT MA01.01 in a 37mm everyday jewel.

Louis Vuitton’s Tambour Convergence Mirror Steel Makes Polished Steel Tough Enough for Every Day

Steel has long been the honest metal of watchmaking, the one you wear to the office, on the weekend, and everywhere in between without a second thought. Louis Vuitton has now given it a far more polished reputation. The Tambour Convergence Mirror Steel takes the House’s youngest collection, launched in 2025 as the first guichet watch fully conceived at La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, and wraps it in a proprietary hardened steel buffed to a mirror from bezel to lugs.

The Haute Minute

Louis Vuitton’s Tambour Convergence Mirror Steel (Ref. W9ST11) wraps the guichet watch in a patented hardened steel rated at 1130 Vickers, fully mirror-polished by hand. The 37mm × 8mm case houses the in-house self-winding caliber LFT MA01.01 with a 45-hour power reserve.

The first three Tambour Convergence models leaned into decorative savoir-faire: a fully polished rose-gold edition, a platinum piece with snow-set diamonds, and a rose-gold model dressed in exterior guilloché. This fourth chapter shifts the spotlight to the case material itself, and in our view it may be the most wearable of the lot.

A Steel That Behaves Like Something Else

Mirror-polished steel is beautiful on day one and humbling by day ten. Louis Vuitton’s answer is a patented treatment that raises the surface hardness of the case by nearly six times. Rated at 1130 Vickers, only slightly below high-tech ceramic, the metal resists the minor scratches that would stand out on a typical polished watch, letting them blend into the shine rather than announce themselves.

The grade is equally considered. This is a stainless steel also used in medical implants, exceptionally low in impurities even at microscopic levels, and that purity is precisely what allows it to be polished to such a high degree and to hold that finish for far longer than most polished metal timepieces.

None of this makes life easy for the casemakers at La Fabrique des Boîtiers. Each Mirror Steel case takes up to three times as long to finish as its rose-gold counterpart, and the artisans entrusted with the work have had to learn how hardened steel reacts under the polishing tool, navigating a fine margin between excess and restraint. The result is fully hand-polished, with sandblasted accents inside the hollowed lugs and along the arcs and circles that outline the time display.

Reading Time Through a Window

The Tambour Convergence earns its name on several levels. Hours and minutes appear as dragging indications on rotating discs, framed by an arched aperture with scalloped edges, while a sculpted lozenge between the two discs acts as the visual anchor for reading the time, a nod to the classic montre à guichet. The shape of that window recalls elements of the interior architecture at the Louis Vuitton Family Home in Asnières, which is a lovely bit of heritage to carry on the wrist.

Here the discs are hand satin-brushed and rhodium-plated brass with black transfer-printed numerals and indexes, a cool, monochrome pairing that lets the case do most of the talking.

Introducing the Tambour Convergence Mirror Steel

Reference W9ST11 measures 37mm across and just 8mm tall, a size designed for versatility, with a tapered crown and lugs that hug the wrist. It is fitted with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, an open caseback, and 30 meters of water resistance, and it arrives on a grey saffiano calf strap with beige calf lining, secured by a strengthened steel pin buckle engraved LOUIS VUITTON.

Inside sits the self-winding caliber LFT MA01.01, the first time-only automatic manufacture movement entirely conceived and produced by La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton. It beats at 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour), uses a free-sprung balance with variable inertia, and delivers a 45-hour power reserve from 201 components, discs included, and six jewels. Turn it over and an 18k pink gold oscillating weight glows through the sapphire caseback, a warm counterpoint to all that cool steel.
