Haute Time had the huge honor of sitting down with Mr. Philippe Merk, CEO of Audemars Piguet at The Park Avenue Armory in New York City, where the brand was celebrating the 40th Anniversary of The Royal Oak timepiece.

The Royal Oak exhibit at the Park Avenue Armory was the first in a series of similar events to come in all major regions. Mr. Philippe Merk explained the interesting story of the Royal Oak and how when introduced in 1972, it was considered an avant-garde piece – a rebel even. It really challenged the conventional ideas of watchmaking then. It took a lot of strength and courage for Audemars Piguet to introduce such a timepiece then but with their smart innovation, it’s no surprise the Royal Oak is celebrating the milestone of 40 years.

“It’s in the genes of the product, this rebellious and extraordinary nature. You will never be able to change that,” said Merk. “It’s not just an unusual watch, it’s become a cultural object.”
