Introducing The New Vacheron Constantin Fiftysix Self-Winding
During Watches and Wonders Shanghai this week, Vacheron Constantin introduces a new addition to its Fiftysix collection: the Fiftysix Self-Winding in 18K 5N pink gold with a black dial. This latest release, which marks the return of the Fiftysix to center stage since its debut in 2018, beautifully blends retro elegance with contemporary sophistication, capturing the essence of Vacheron Constantin’s rich heritage and innovative spirit.
The Fiftysix collection, introduced in 2018, draws its inspiration from the aesthetic codes of the 1950s, particularly the iconic Reference 6073, a landmark model created by Vacheron Constantin in 1956. This reference model is celebrated for its design. It is one of the first Vacheron Constantin timepieces to feature a self-winding movement—a revolutionary development in an era dominated by hand-wound watches.
The Fiftysix collection is unique in that it blends the past with the present. It combines the classic appeal of 1950s design elements with modern craftsmanship, creating a retro-contemporary aesthetic that is both timeless and current. The Maltese cross, Vacheron Constantin’s emblem, is subtly integrated into various design elements, including the lugs and the oscillating weight, reminding the brand of its nearly 270 years of watchmaking excellence.
The latest model in the Fiftysix collection features a 40 mm round case crafted from 18K 5N pink gold, a choice that exudes luxury and warmth. This case is complemented by a striking black dial, a first for the Fiftysix line, which combines two distinct finishes: an opaline center and a sunburst chapter ring. This double finish creates a captivating play of light and shade, further accentuated by the sparkle of the pink gold case.
The dial’s design pays homage to the sector-type dials popular in the 1950s, offering a refined and vintage look. Using 18K 5N pink gold for the applied Roman numerals, hour markers, and hands, all coated with luminescent material, ensures excellent readability even in low light conditions. The box-type sapphire crystal enhances the retro feel reminiscent of post-war watch designs, adding a distinctive charm to the overall aesthetic.
The watch is paired with an anthracite nubuck calfskin leather strap with ecru stitching, perfectly complementing the black dial and adding a contemporary touch to the vintage-inspired design. On the reverse side, the Fiftysix Self-Winding reveals its heart—the Calibre 1326 self-winding movement, visible through a sapphire crystal caseback. The movement is beautifully finished with Côtes de Genève stripes, and the openworked pink gold oscillating weight is adorned with the Maltese cross, a symbol of the brand’s enduring commitment to watchmaking mastery.
The Fiftysix Self-Winding is not just a watch but a tribute to the 1950s, a period often regarded as the golden age of round, elegant timepieces. The design draws heavily from Tera’s aesthetics, particularly from Reference 6073. This model was notable for its technical advancements and distinctive style, characterized by streamlined lugs inspired by the branches of the Maltese cross, a box-type crystal, and a sector-type dial with alternating Arabic numerals and baton-style hour markers.
The new Fiftysix Self-Winding, reference 4600E/000R-H101, is powered by the Manufacture caliber 1326, a self-winding mechanical movement that operates at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) and offers a power reserve of approximately 48 hours. The movement consists of 142 components, including 25 jewels, and provides indications for hours, minutes, central seconds, and date.
The watch is water-resistant to 3 bar (approximately 30 meters), ensuring durability and practicality. The caseback, crafted from transparent sapphire crystal, allows for an unobstructed view of the movement. With the introduction of the new Fiftysix Self-Winding, Vacheron Constantin continues to honor its rich heritage while embracing modernity. This timepiece is the perfect example of how Vacheron Constantin bridges the past and the present, offering a watch that is as relevant today as it was in the golden age of watchmaking.
