After yesterday’s unforgettable image of Bo Derek wearing the Lady Aquaracer, today we’re taking a close up look at the men’s version: the TAG Heuer Aquaracer 72.

This September, the timepiece was worn by Oracle Team USA during their historic win at the America’s Cup. An extreme-tech digital chronograph, the Aquaracer 72 was co-developed by the engineering departments of TAG Heuer and Oracle Team USA.

Named for the team’s AC72 racing yacht, the Aquaracer 72 was customized for each sailor, and wirelessly linked directly to the boat’s onboard computers. As a result, it does more than tell time; the Aquaracer 72 displays real-time information like boat speed, true wind speed, true wind direction and true wind angle. Inside the oversized 51mm diameter case is a highly legible screen with an intense luminosity (which has to be reloaded after each race). The screen also features a water-repellent coating which keeps it clean, dry and salt-free. A water-resistant leather strap with an adaptable folding clasp lets this watch fit comfortably over the crew’s wetsuits.

Unfortunately, the Aquaracer 72 is not available for commercial purchase. Only 50 pieces were created, for exclusive use by the Oracle Team USA crew members. However, us land-lubbers can get the Aquaracer 500M Calibre 72 Team USA edition (pictured below). Featuring a special Oracle Team USA boat stamp on its caseback, this regatta countdown timepiece is the newest edition of TAG Heuer’s iconic Aquaracer 500M.
