Mother's Day is almost there again, which means that florists are getting busy, restaurants are trying to keep up with reservations, yet many children are still contemplating what to give their mother. At Haute Time we are of course very biased and think that a watch would make the perfect gift, like one of these five for example!

After Part I of Haute Time's Favorite Baselworld Watches, there are still a few new watches that we would like to highlight, as they made strong entries to our wishlists, and perhaps those of yours as well.

For a few days a year Basel, normally a modest provincial capital on the Swiss borders with Germany and France, is the capital of the world, the watch world that is. This year is particularly strong in terms of new offerings. The vast majority of the brands exhibiting at Baselworld introduced watches that are very pure in their DNA, while at the same time in tune with what the market currently desires, like these four watches:

One of the conclusions of the report is that large, well-funded companies that already have strong brand recognition are doing much better than smaller brands. That advantage is reinforced among luxury holding companies, which again benefit from having big pockets

Rarely has a name for a watch been as appropriate as for the Bvlgari Diva’s Dream Minute Repeater, as this timepiece can only be categorized for what it name already tells us: a dream. This dream is pretty much a fairy tale as it describes the marriage of a beautiful case, and a stunning dial, with one of the Haute Horlogerie's finest, and thinnest, minute repeater movements in the world: the manufacture caliber BVL 362 which we can also find in the Bvlgari Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater.

While the SIHH takes place in the Palexpo halls of Geneva, this is not the only place in the city where you can find the latest and greatest watches. In the downtown area, brands that are not officially part of the SIHH setup shop on boats and in the exclusives hotels near the lake. For them, Baselworld is often the main fair to introduce their new models, but that didn’t stop them to bring a few novelties to Geneva as well!

When the new year is coming closer people tend to look back at what the current year has brought them. During the course of the year, the tide turned, and many brands enjoyed, once more, increased sales. This was in part due to some incredible new models that were introduced, which worked up an appetite with watch collectors and connoisseurs. At Haute Time we also look back, with our favorite watches of 2017!

Granted, these skeletons are not very scary, so that might make them even more perfect for your closet because they will complement a large range of outfits. Skeleton watches have always been quite a challenge to make, as you cut away what a watch so desperately needs: the stability of the main plate and bridges. That makes skeleton watches almost like a walk on the high wire for watchmakers, and so enticing for the rest of us!

It is somewhat of a contradiction: to create a complicated watch, and then make it look as simple and understated as possible. This not only requires technical prowess, but also quite a bit of skill from the designers, as nothing is as difficult as making a complicated watch look simple, yet these four watches do just that!

Animals have always been a great inspiration for watchmakers. Surprisingly, a lot of designs based on an animal become iconic watches. This is most certainly the case of the Serpenti, once the favorite watch of Elizabeth Taylor.

Blue, black and silver are by far the most common dial colors when it comes to watches. In the past gold has also been a favorite, but changing times, and the death of two-tone watches has pushed those into becoming more of a rarity as well.

They deserve to be a complication in their own right: ultra-slim watches. Although many of these movements only power two or three hands, making them is pretty much like putting together a watch movement while walking the high wire. It is a constant balancing act, in which it is important to maintain the integrity of the movement while you make it as slim as possible.

When it comes to watch designers, few can hold a candle to Gerald Genta. Thanks to a long and illustrious career, he created many of the industries icons.

The ladies watches at Baselworld ranged from functional, elegant every day watches to elaborate Haute Joaillerie creations and everything in between. Selecting a top five among them is quite a challenge, but one we always like to tackle.
