Richard Mille is Represented by a Mystery Ambassador

Richard Mille revealed a new athletic watch this week, a version of the RM 38 that seems to be clad in Jamaica’s colors. Adding a degree of mystery is the Olympic rule which forbids Mille to name the inspiration for the theme, who happens to be competing in London, until three days after the closing ceremonies. Hublot already employs gold-medal sprinter Usain Bolt as a brand ambassador, so that rules him out. One possibility is 22 year old Yohan Blake, who is seen as Bolt’s probable replacement and possible usurper. Blake beat Bolt in Olympic trials for the 100 m READ MORE

Yayoi Kusama Brings the Avant Garde to Louis Vuitton

Yayoi Kusama is best known for her perspective-skewing work with polka dots, covering everything from trees to giant pumpkins with different sized dollops of black or white circles, usually affixed to a background of fire engine red. In recognition of her award-winning work, French fashion house Louis Vuitton has teamed up with Kusama and designer Marc Jacobs to produce a special edition of its Tambour line of wristwatches. Measuring 29 mm and powered by a quartz movement, the Kusamesque montre is faithful to Kusama’s vision of repetitive patterns, though unlike her paintings and sculptures, this example of her work is READ MORE

Hautlence Offers a Window to the World of Watches

Hautlence has earned quite a loyal following for a seven year old company, especially considering the fact that it only produces approximately 100 watches per year. This year, 56 of those watches will be the inspired HL2.1, in white gold, and the HL2.2 in pink gold. The HL2 series is unique in part because of its novel hour display, which rests on a 12-link chain in the upper left of the case. Resembling a tank’s treads, it takes four seconds for the chain to advance at the top of every hour. Minutes are displayed on a retrograde dial below the READ MORE
