What Makes The Sound Of A Minute Repeater So Magical?

The history of the minute repeater goes back to a time before electric light. As lighting an oil lamp was quite some work, watchmakers build repeating mechanisms in pocket watches so that they could sound the time on demand. The invention of the minute repeater was claimed by both Edward Barlow and Daniel Quare, but it was Quare who obtained a patent for it in 1687. Initially, watches equipped with a repeating mechanism used bells to chime the time, later to be replaced with wire gong, which took up less space. These weren't minute repeaters, at first, but quarter repeaters, chiming the time to the closest quarter.

Exploring The World Of The Traditional Tourbillon

Recently we already discussed how the tourbillon turned from a relatively obscure device to increase the precision of a watch or clock, to the favorite complication of collectors. Watch of the Week: Breguet Marine Chronograph 5527

Last year during Baselworld, Breguet surprised us with the Marine Équation Marchante 5887, which combined a tourbillon with an equation of time complication. This year it became clear that this highly complicated watch was just at the forefront of a new generation of Marine watches. Live From Basel: Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique 5367 Grand Feu Enamel

A Breguet fitted with a tourbillon is always holding a special position in the world of watches. This is not only thanks to the fact that it was Abraham-Louis Breguet, the brand's founder, who invented this complication, which he patented in 1801 but also because the brand never stopped innovating. Perhaps the best example of this is the Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique.

What New Watches To Expect At Baselworld 2018?

This month Baselworld will open its doors again, and it will be different from previous years. While the fair will not only be a few days shorter, it will also be smaller, as some brands have either moved to the SIHH or forgo the Swiss fairs at all in favour of more targeted, local events. The independents will, however, solidify their position further, and become a more prominent, and integrated part of Baselworld.
