TAG Heuer is celebrating its 160 years of fine watchmaking history with the release of the new TAG Heuer Carrera Silver Limited Edition.

The limited edition only has 1,860 pieces, as a nod to the very year the company was founded by Edouard Heuer in Saint-Imier, Switzerland.

The new design revives the 1960s Tag Heuer Carrera line, featuring “One of 1860” and “LIMITED EDITION” engraved on the case-back of every watch in the collection, and powered by 21st-century innovation in watchmaking.

In 1962, then-CEO Jack Heuer heard of the South American race, the Carrera Panamericana, and knew “Carrera” (Spanish for “road”, “race”, “career” and “course”) was the perfect name for a new timepiece, which was debuted in 1964. The Heuer Carrera is a perpetual presence on the wrist of drivers around the world. The silver-dial model (known by horologists as the “2447S”) is being re-introduced in the new edition with new updates.

The new Carrera Silver Limited Edtion has its predecessor’s dial and polished case and pushers. From the original, the new edition differs slightly in the shape, measures 39 mm (originally 36 mm). The permanent indicator is at 6 o’clock instead of 9 o’clock due to the difference in the construction of the 1963 Valjoux 72 and today’s TAG Heuer Automatic Calibre 02 Manufacture movement.

The central hour and minute hands in the new edition are facetted and coated with beige SuperLuminova®. A domed sapphire crystal protecting the fine pieces in the watch gives it a retro look evocative to the original Heuer Carrera. The watch comes on a black alligator strap and is presented in special packaging.

The Calibre Heuer 02 movement provides the new watch with 80 hours of power reserve (30 hours more than Calibre Heuer 01). The thinner movement allows for a thinner design and more comfort on the wrist. The thickness is 6.95 mm, in contrast to Heuer 01’s 7.30 mm. The vertical clutch improves the precision of the start-and-stop functions and the watch’s second hand, ensuring no loss of time when using the functions. The frequency is 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour), bettering precision and stability.

The new Tag Heuer Carrera Silver Limited Edition will be available worldwide starting in June 2020.
