Nautilus vs Aquanaut: How Patek Philippe’s Steel Sports Icons Compare

The Nautilus vs Aquanaut debate gets a 2026 update, from the $27,257 Aquanaut 5167A to the $82,021 Nautilus 5811/1G, plus where both trade today.

Nautilus vs Aquanaut: How Patek Philippe’s Steel Sports Icons Compare

Patek Philippe makes two steel sports watches with porthole DNA, and collectors have argued about them for as long as both have existed. The Nautilus is the icon, the octagonal bezel that launched a thousand integrated-bracelet imitators. The Aquanaut is the younger, more casual sibling on its embossed composite strap. In 2026, the Nautilus vs Aquanaut question has a new wrinkle: by the market’s own numbers, the Aquanaut has quietly become the stronger performer.

The Haute Minute

Patek Philippe’s Aquanaut 5167A retails at $27,257 and trades near $70,100, while the white gold Nautilus 5811/1G lists at $82,021 and trades near $168,862. Across both collections, the Aquanaut carries the higher average premium, about 102.0 percent versus 85.2 percent.

What follows is a look at both collections as they stand today, with current U.S. suggested retail prices from Patek Philippe and approximate pre-owned market prices checked on Nov. 5, 2026. If you are weighing the Nautilus against its Audemars Piguet rival instead, our Royal Oak vs Nautilus comparison covers that matchup.

The Nautilus Today

With the steel Ref. 5711 long gone from the catalog, the men’s time-only Nautilus now lives in white gold. The Ref. 5811/1G measures 41mm, with a sunburst blue dial with a black-gradient rim, horizontal embossing, and a white gold bracelet with Patek’s patented fold-over clasp. It runs on the self-winding caliber 26-330 S C, with a power reserve of 35 to 45 hours, and carries a U.S. suggested retail price of $82,021.

Steel has not disappeared from the collection—it has simply moved up the complication ladder. The Nautilus Annual Calendar Ref. 5726/1A pairs a blue dial inspired by the original 1976 model with an annual calendar, moon phases, and 24-hour indication, driven by the caliber 26-330 S QA LU 24H. It lists at $62,766. The Flyback Chronograph Travel Time Ref. 5990/1A, at 40.5mm with the caliber CH 28-520 C FUS, is $76,895, while the ladies’ steel Ref. 7118/1A is $35,884. The rose gold Ref. 5712/1R, with its asymmetric power reserve, moon phase, and date layout, is $97,650.

The Aquanaut Today

The Aquanaut’s case shares the Nautilus’s rounded-octagon silhouette but swaps the horizontal embossing for a raised grid pattern and, most often, a matching composite strap. The Ref. 5167A is the quintessential version: 40.8mm in steel, a charcoal gray embossed dial with a black gradient, alternating polished and satin-brushed finishes, and the same caliber 26-330 S C found in the 5811/1G. Its U.S. suggested retail price is $27,257, roughly a third of the time-only Nautilus.

From there the collection fans out. The Aquanaut Luce Ref. 5267/200A, 38.8mm in steel with the quartz caliber E23-250 S C, is $24,632. The 42.2mm white gold Ref. 5168G is $57,890. The rose gold Ref. 5167R is $53,514, the Travel Time Ref. 5164G is $71,643, and the steel Aquanaut Chronograph Ref. 5968A, a 42.2mm flyback with orange chronograph indications and the caliber CH 28-520 C, is $61,766.

Size is another quiet dividing line. The ladies’ 7118/1A offers a smaller steel Nautilus, while the Aquanaut Luce brings the grid dial down to 38.8mm and swaps the mechanical movement for quartz with a battery life of approximately three years. For men’s sizes, the Nautilus sits at 40.5mm to 41mm across the references above, and the Aquanaut runs from 40.8mm in the 5167A to 42.2mm in the 5168G and the chronograph. Patek also leans on precious metals differently in each family. The men’s time-only Nautilus, the 5811/1G, comes in white gold, while the time-only Aquanaut is offered in steel, rose gold, and white gold, which is a big part of why the entry price gap between the two is so wide.

What the Market Says

Retail is only half the story with Patek’s sports watches, because almost nothing in either family trades below it. As of early November 2026, the 5811/1G was changing hands at roughly $168,862 on the pre-owned market, about double its sticker. The discontinued steel 5711/1A sat near $114,526. The 5726/1A was around $128,080, the 5990/1A around $119,924, and the 5712/1R around $259,649.

The Aquanaut numbers are where things get interesting. The 5167A was trading at approximately $70,100, more than two and a half times its retail price, and it remains one of the most actively traded references in either family. The 5968A chronograph sat near $139,021, the 5164G Travel Time near $143,907, the 5168G near $94,820, and the 5167R near $99,251. Across each collection, the Aquanaut showed an average premium of about 102.0 percent over retail versus about 85.2 percent for the Nautilus.

Those are approximate market figures, not appraisals, and they move. For the broader picture of where values have been heading this year, our look at luxury watch values in the third quarter of 2026 puts both models in context.

Living With Each

On the wrist, the two feel more different than the spec sheets suggest. The Nautilus, on its bracelet, is a dress-sport hybrid with real presence, and its horizontally embossed dial rewards a cuff and a jacket. The Aquanaut on its strap is lighter, more relaxed, and easier to forget you are wearing, which is exactly the point. Both use the same family of self-winding movements visible through a sapphire caseback, and both are made in small numbers by the same Geneva Maison.

Access is the other variable. Patek’s authorized retailers continue to allocate both lines carefully, which is why so many buyers end up on the secondary market. If that is your route, our piece on why collectors are moving to pre-owned explains the trade-offs.

In our view, the 5167A is the cleanest expression of what Patek’s sporty side is about: the core movement, a sub-41mm case, and a strap made for weekends, for a retail price that still starts with a two. Our pick for anyone who wants a Nautilus, meanwhile, is the steel 5726/1A, a steel Nautilus with a genuinely useful annual calendar at $62,766.
