Jake Gyllenhaal just appeared in a new Cartier campaign, wearing one of our favorite timepieces from this year’s Watches and Wonders: the Cartier Santos Dual-Time — alongside other Santos novelties.

A beacon of design and watchmaking, the Santos de Cartier has captured the essence of innovation and style since its creation in 1904. Known for its iconic design and innovative spirit, this timepiece has become actor and close friend of the Maison’s Gyllenhaal’s preferred watch, showcasing Cartier’s timeless elegance and modern versatility in watchmaking.

The Santos de Cartier story begins with Louis Cartier’s friendship with aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. Cartier created the watch specifically for Santos-Dumont so he could tell the time while flying. The design was revolutionary – a square shape with eight visible screws – a bold move that would become emblematic of Cartier’s future in watch design. As the first modern wristwatch designed specifically for the wrist, it broke new ground in form and function.

The creation of Santos de Cartier watches involves meticulous drawing and a focus on the purity of lines. The Santos de Cartier features the 1847 MC automatic caliber, showcasing innovation and durability. This feature allows you to easily switch between different straps made of materials such as steel, gold, calf, and alligator skin. Additionally, the patented SmartLink system enables simple bracelet adjustments without the need for tools. Each link is equipped with a push button for a customized fit.
