Grand Seiko is a brand we were most excited to see this year in Geneva. And while we were expected to be blown away by Grand Seiko’s one-of-one Grand Seiko Spring Drive Jewelry Masterpiece, another timepiece also caught our attention: the Tentagraph.

On the heels of last year’s debut of sports watches from the Evolution 9 Collection at Watches and Wonders, the Tentagraph makes history for the brand as the first-ever mechanical chronograph for Grand Seiko. Setting a new standard in elapsed time measurement and precision, the Tentagraph is equipped with the revolutionary high-beat Caliber 9SA5 as its base. Like Caliber 9SA5, the new Tentagraph Caliber 9SC5 beats ten times per second, ensuring high accuracy when measuring elapsed time as well as the time of day — and due to its energy-efficient escapement and two barrels, the watch runs for three days even when the chronograph is in operation, making the Tentagraph the 10-beat chronograph with the most extended power reserve in the industry today. The movement also incorporates a three-pointed hammer, ensuring that when the reset pusher is pressed, the hands return to zero instantly and perfectly synchronized.

Impressively, Grand Seiko has also enforced a new and longer testing procedure with this timepiece as Grand Seiko has added three days to the testing of the Tentagraph’s time-of-day accuracy, which is assessed in six positions and at three temperatures — so, in total, the movement is now tested for 20 days.

Like all Grand Seiko models, the dial is inspired by the landscape surrounding Mt. Iwate – more specifically, the blue hue takes inspiration from the night sky above Mt Iwate. The case and bracelet are made of high-intensity titanium, which is about 30% lighter and more scratch resistant than stainless steel to maximize durability, and the two convex pushers ensure the operability required for measuring elapsed time at the highest level.

The Grand Seiko Tentagraph joins the Evolution 9 Collection and will be available at the Grand Seiko Boutiques and select retail partners starting in June 2023.
