Grand Seiko Celebrates The Watch That Defined Grand Seiko Style
There’s no denying the beautiful intricacies of ‘Grand Seiko Style.’ In 1967, the 44GS was the very first watch that embodied the renowned design code of nine principles woven throughout each Grand Seiko creation that followed. To celebrate the 55th anniversary of the legendary 44GS, Grand Seiko has unveiled a limited edition in its Heritage Collection, known as the SBGP017.

The quartz watch with a 40 mm case emulates the original spirit of the 1967 design with a striking blue dial. The dial is designed to mimic the texture of the clouds that form in the morning around the mountains in the Shinshu region, where this particular timepiece — and all Grand Seiko quartz watches — are made. The icy blue color of the dial is complemented by the rich dark blue seconds hand and the five-pointed star at six o’clock.

The timepiece, powered by an incredibly precise version of Caliber 9F85 that is accurate to +5 to -5 seconds a year, is a remarkable demonstration of Grand Seiko’s watchmaking. This high precision rate is achieved by using individually-selected aged quartz crystals. In addition to the accuracy, which is seen through the caseback, the timepiece also features an impressive time difference adjustment function that allows the hour hand to be moved without stopping the seconds hand.

A watch that is both a tribute to the esteemed brand heritage as well as a nod to the modernity in its design, the SBGP017 stands as a true testament to Grand Seiko’s unparalleled craftsmanship.
