For centuries the small town of Glashütte has been the epicenter of German watchmaking. While there are indeed plenty of similarities between their approach to watchmaking and that of the Swiss, there are also enough things different. This allowed a certain number of manufactures to find their niche and rise to new levels of greatness when the Berlin Wall came down, and East Germany was joined with West once more. Among them was Glashütte Original, who presents with a Senator Moon Phase Skeletonized Edition a German take on how a skeleton watch should look.

A remarkable number of watches in Grand Seiko's collection feature a second time-zone complication. That makes them a perfect companion to have around the wrist when you travel the globe. For anyone who is into cars, today marks the start of one of the most exciting periods of the year in the automotive space: Monterey Car Week! It’s well established that a passion for high-end cars and fine timepieces often overlap, and the luxury watch industry habitually draws inspiration from the auto industry. So in honor of Monterey Car Week, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite auto-inspired watches from some of the world’s top timepiece brands.

2019 is a special year for quite a few brands, as it marks for them important events in their history. For some, it was the launch of an iconic model or important movement, while for others it was an event at which one of their watches became legendary. That makes it that these four brands have something to celebrate:

On July 24, during the Elton John AIDS Foundation Gala, Bentley announced the release of their limited-edition model, the all-new 2020 Flying Spur. At the gala, it was auctioned off to one of the guests, which included stars from the biopic, Rocketman, and many other A-listers. The proceeds will go towards the foundation. The first owner of the Flying Spur First Edition has been invited by Bentley “to create their own bespoke and completely unique car through Bentley’s exclusive Co-Creation Luxury Service, offered only to a tiny selection of clients.”

Few movies, if any, can live up to the status that The Godfather has achieved. This 1972 blockbuster, featuring Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone, also features one of the most memorable theme songs in history. It was written by Italian composer Giovanni "Nino" Rota, and its first few notes are enough to be recognized by people around the world. For Jacob & Co, the movie, but especially the music, was the inspiration for an exceptional watch.

The Tonneau is one of Cartier's oldest wrist-watch designs that are still in production today. It was launched in 1906, two years after the legendary Santos was introduced. Unlike the Santos, has the Tonneau spend most of its career outside of the limelight. In its early years, it was made in small numbers, often on request and as of 1998, it was part of the legendary CPCP-collection, which La Maison discontinued in 2008.

Introduced at Baselworld 2019, the Patek Philippe 5172G takes over the previous ref. 5170 family as the company’s manual-wound chronograph model. And since the hand-wound chronograph sans other complications has become (after a lengthy absence between the late sixties and late nineties) one of Patek Philippe’s signature watches again, the ref. 5172G has some big shoes to fill. Let’s walk through the details.

Why do so many brands go all out and create watches that house several different complications into a single watch? Because they can and because we love it. While the research and development behind these watches often take long, and the production of them is as limited as it is complicated, their appeal is unmatched. They serve as a symbol of what can be achieved when you really want to, although that in what way they deliver this may differ as these four watches show.

Diamond-set watches come in several different varieties. Some are simply the luxurious siblings of similar watches which are not set with these precious stones, while others were created from the start with diamonds in mind. In most cases, they have to share the limelight with a complicated movement, but there is a category of watches that only has one goal; to let the diamonds take center stage.

Watches that use a spectrum of colored gemstones to create a rainbow effect have become a modest trend in recent years. Most brands use sapphires to create this effect, often in addition with amethysts, tsavorites and other colored gemstones. With sapphires, most people immediately think of the blue colored stones, while they come in nearly the complete color spectrum. Rubies are, just like all the other sapphires, a variety of the mineral corundum as well, only did in the past the red version of these stones got a name of their own. Because they are available in so many different hues, they play an important role to create the perfect rainbow effect.

Carbon has become an increasingly popular material for use in watchmaking these days but no other brand has taken this as far as Roger Dubuis. With the Excalibur Spider Carbon3, they present a watch which is not only equipped with a case and bracelet made from this material but incorporated it in the movement as well.

Summer is here and HUBLOT, the Swiss luxury watchmaker, has unveiled their Eighth Edition Classic Fusion Chronograph Mykonos in an elegant Greek style.
