It was hot this weekend in Geneva, very hot. Not so much the actual temperature in the city, but the atmosphere at the at the Daytona Ultimatum auction organized by Phillips. Some of the rarest Rolex Daytonas were up for grabs, and many bidders, worldwide, bid up against each other in order to add them to their collection. The results where conclusive: the Rolex Daytona is one of the hottest models in the vintage market!

While for non-Italian speakers the nickname 'Padellone' sounds beautiful, it is used to describe a large frying pan, and that is not something you expect in relation to one of the most beautiful watches Rolex ever made; Reference 8171.

This years edition of Baselworld was also the scene where quite a few stunning watches for ladies where introduced. Only a couple of years ago quartz still ruled supreme, but today most of the leading watch brands have extensive collections of mechanical ladies watches. That doesn't make it any easier for us to select our favourites, but it does make it all the more fun!

Baselworld 2018 was a blast, with strong new additions to the collections across all brands. While this is great news for the industry, and watch collectors and connoisseurs, it does make it quite difficult for us to pick out our favourites, but here it goes!

This year is particularly strong in terms of new offerings. This month Baselworld will open its doors again, and it will be different from previous years. While the fair will not only be a few days shorter, it will also be smaller, as some brands have either moved to the SIHH or forgo the Swiss fairs at all in favour of more targeted, local events. The independents will, however, solidify their position further, and become a more prominent, and integrated part of Baselworld.

One of the conclusions of the report is that large, well-funded companies that already have strong brand recognition are doing much better than smaller brands. That advantage is reinforced among luxury holding companies, which again benefit from having big pockets
