The Short Answer

Haute Time previews a recent exhibition in Paris and takes a look at Jaeger-LeCoultre's new collection launched last fall.

Seconds… Doctors, musicians and broadcasters need them for professional reasons. And in our daily activities, just one second can change our entire life: we can fall in love, miss a train, or score that winning goal.

Jaeger-LeCoultre, in sponsoring the works of photographer Philippe Halsman at the Jeu de Paume Museum in Paris, illustrates the importance of a single second. Halsman’s “jumpology photography” consisted of capturing illustrious faces in a spontaneous way by having the subject jump in front of his camera, thereby harnessing a “true second” of expression.

With the Geophysic® True Second® timepiece and its true second system that causes the seconds hand to move forward while “beating the second” or performing a “jump” every second, Jaeger-LeCoultre makes it easy to time both useful and playful moments, such as my “true-second” jump organized by the watchbrand at the Museum. For your relief and mine, I am showing Marilyn Monroe instead.

Inspired by the Geophysic Chronometer specially created by the watchbrand to counter magnetic forces, worn by demanding scientists on board the USS Nautilus submarine that sailed under the North Pole during the 1958 International Geophysical Year, the new Geophysic collection also incorporates for the first time, after eight years of research, the Gyrolab® first developed in 2007 to equip the Master Compressor Extreme Lab 1 watch.

Its screwed caseback for extra water resistance and SuperLuminova® dots in the case middle for easy reading in the dark are both characteristic of the original 1958 model.
