At Watches & Wonders 2026 in Geneva, Chanel is making one of the most compelling cases for its place at the forefront of haute horlogerie with the debut of the Monsieur Lion Tourbillon Black Edition — a strictly limited release of 55 pieces that distills everything the House’s watchmaking program does best into a single, remarkably confident timepiece.

The watch is powered by the Caliber 5.1, an entirely in-house flying tourbillon movement manufactured by the artisans of the Chanel Watch Manufacture. With manual winding, a power reserve of approximately 72 hours, two spring barrels, a variable inertia balance, and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour — 4Hz — the movement is as technically serious as it is visually extraordinary. At 33.10mm in diameter and just 5.90mm thick, the Caliber 5.1 comprises 151 components and 28 rubies, and its flying tourbillon is positioned at 6 o’clock on the black openwork dial — the movement’s architecture fully visible, entirely intentional.

At the heart of the tourbillon cage sits the detail that makes this watch unmistakably Chanel: a meticulously crafted lion’s head sculpture, laser-engraved in a block of titanium. The lion has been the emblem and signature of every movement manufactured by the House since 2016 — Mademoiselle’s astrological sign, synonymous with power and protection, rendered here with a precision that rewards the closest inspection. It is a detail that transforms a horological complication into something with genuine meaning.

The case is 42mm in diameter, crafted in matte black highly resistant ceramic and steel with black coating — materials that absorb light rather than reflect it, giving the watch a depth and presence that a polished case could never achieve. The bezel carries the same treatment, and the sapphire crystal caseback bears the inscription “LIMITED TO 55” — a quiet reminder of just how rare this piece is. The crown is steel with black coating, and the watch is presented on a black nylon strap with black calfskin trim and lining, secured by a steel with black coating triple-folding buckle. Water resistance is rated to 30 meters.

The Monsieur Lion Tourbillon Black Edition is, in every sense, a watch built for someone who already understands what Chanel’s watchmaking program represents — and who wants the most distilled, most nocturnal expression of it. Limited to 55 pieces, it is one of the most compelling limited editions to emerge from Geneva this week.
