Hublot is the undisputed king of sapphire cased watches, and for several reasons. First of all, they can create sapphire in different colors, like blue and yellow. Creating sapphire cases, in general, is still not an easy task. The few brands that offer sapphire cased watches usually only make about two dozen of them or so in a limited edition. However, this type of watches is probably the only one where being able to produce them in 'volume' is more difficult than making just a few. Hublot also doesn't do that with just a single watch but offers an entire collection of sapphire cased watches, of which all have shapes that are complex to make. As the engines roared last weekend in France, at the 24-hours of Le Mans, TAG Heuer took the stage to launch a very special version of the Monaco. This model rose to fame, not in the least because it was on the wrist of Steve McQueen in the 1971 cult-classic 'Le Mans'. At an exclusive event, TAG Heuer treated their guests at a screening of this movie, at the place where it was made. Among them was Steve McQueen's son Chad McQueen, but also brand ambassador Patrick Dempsey, Formula E champion Jean-Éric Vergne and Derek Bell, who not only won Le Mans five times but also drove one of the cars in the movie.

This year Zenith is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the legendary El Primero. This chronograph became known for its high frequency of 36.000 Vph/5Hz, which meant that it could measure up to 1/10th of a second. The movement was so exceptional that it was even adopted by brands such as Rolex, Ebel, Concord and Daniel Roth for the use in their watches, either in its original configuration or slightly modified.

Last year F.P. Journe launched its Centigraphe and Automatique Réserve in titanium, a material that most certainly suits two of the most sportive watches of the brand. However, precious metals have always played a very important part in the universe of Journe, as gold is even his material of choice to craft movements from. It is, therefore, more than fitting that he now introduces both models in platinum as well as in 18k 6N gold.

After the 2018 edition, the Swatch Group decided to leave Baselworld and launched this year a new format in which they introduced the novelties of Blancpain, Breguet, Omega, Harry Winston, Jaquet Droz and Glashütte Original. Under the name 'Time to Move' a carefully curated selection of the worldwide press, which included Haute Time, was invited to Switzerland to discover the new watches, with the exception of Glashütte Original, in the manufactures in which they where created. In an intimate setting, this allowed us to fully go into the details of each particular watch and discuss them with the people responsible for their creation. When it comes to men's watches, most brands expanded their lineup during the 2019 edition of Baselworld with some solid additions. Some of them favoured evolution over revolution, further perfecting what are already great watches, while others developed breathtaking technical novelties. One of the great difficulties of any fair, and especially Baselworld, is to pick from this wide array of often very different watches the favorites that truly stand out.

Baselworld, the fair, is truly trying to dress for success, as its new layout and decorations have a more luxurious air. This was needed if only to match the atmosphere in which the brands that exhibit exist. While the classic dress watch might not be such a dominating segment of the market, new watches have taken over this position. They might not be gold, three-handers, but they are refined creations, often on the understated side, that feels most comfortable on the wrist of people who know that success is not an end station, but an everyday quest.

Again, it is not just the introduction of one new model, but a significant extension of nearly all the signature lines in their collection. Fifty years ago the Omega Speedmaster became the very first watch to be worn on the moon when Apollo XI landed, and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped on the lunar surface. This is the stuff of legends, as it was a defining moment in the history of humankind. To celebrate this major achievement Omega created the BA135.022, the first limited edition of the Speedmaster dedicated to achievement in space exploration. It was a precious watch, crafted from yellow gold, with a yellow gold bracelet, and a distinct burgundy bezel, made from anodised aluminium and powered by caliber 861.

If there is one brand that has seawater running through its veins, it is Panerai. Throughout its history, the world's oceans where its playground, and even today this strong connection continues. For some years now, Panerai has put its money where its mouth is and sponsored the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge. Here the world's oceangoing heritage, consisting of some of the most beautiful yachts ever conceived, still battle it out for the highest honor in challenging regattas.

Zenith has always had a passion for fine cigars. Although a completely different product from watches, the craftsmanship, knowledge and passion needed to create a top quality product isn't. It is, therefore, no wonder that Zenith joined Habanos in celebrating the 50th anniversary of their Trinidad cigars with four very special Pilot Type 20 Chronographs to mark the occasion.

Black on black seems to be one of the most boring color combinations possible for watches. It seems to be hard for designs to shine, and show their full potential when it is more difficult to see all the different details. It is however exactly that understated look that draws quite a bit of people to these watches, and over the years they have created their niche in the world of watches.
