IWC Unveils the Portugieser Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph
IWC Schaffhausen has introduced a remarkable addition to its renowned Portugieser collection with the release of the Portugieser Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph. Limited to just 100 pieces, this exquisite timepiece exemplifies Swiss horological mastery, combining technical precision with artistic sophistication. Its 43.5-millimeter case is crafted from 18-carat Armor Gold®, a cutting-edge material that offers significantly enhanced hardness compared to conventional gold alloys, ensuring long-lasting durability and brilliance.
The dial of the Portugieser Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph is finished in an Obsidian hue, resulting from a meticulous manufacturing process. Comprising 15 layers of transparent lacquer and requiring 60 individual steps, the dial achieves an extraordinary depth and optical brilliance. Complemented by gold-plated hands and solid gold appliques, the dial reflects a balance of technical precision and timeless design. Completing the look, the watch is paired with a sophisticated black alligator leather strap by Italian artisan Santoni, secured with an 18-carat Armor Gold® folding clasp.

Central to this model’s distinction is the flying minute tourbillon, a revered complication in high-end watchmaking. Positioned at 6 o’clock, the tourbillon is an intricate mechanism housing the pallet lever and escape wheel within a rotating cage. This cage completes a full rotation every 60 seconds, reducing the adverse effects of gravity on the watch’s accuracy. Made up of 56 finely crafted components and weighing just 0.675 grams, this tourbillon is equipped with a stop mechanism allowing precise, to-the-second time adjustments.
IWC Schaffhausen’s proprietary Diamond Shell® technology enhances the pallet lever and escape wheel, both of which are fabricated from silicon. This innovative coating reduces friction and optimizes energy transmission within the movement. These technical advancements contribute to the exceptional 68-hour power reserve, making this timepiece as reliable as it is elegant.
Beyond the tourbillon, the Portugieser Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph offers additional complications that elevate its functionality. At the 9 o’clock position, a retrograde date display adds a distinctive aesthetic and user-friendly feature. The hand sweeps along a semi-circular scale from the 1st to the 31st, automatically resetting to the starting point at the end of each month, creating a seamless interaction with the passage of time.
Adding to its mechanical sophistication, the flyback chronograph complication allows for precise and instantaneous resetting of the stopwatch. Displayed at 12 o’clock through a combined totalizer for hours and minutes, the chronograph can be swiftly reset and restarted with a single push of the button, enhancing functionality for the wearer who demands precision in motion.
Powering this masterpiece is the IWC-manufactured calibre 89900, an automatic movement comprising 375 meticulously assembled components. Operating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, this calibre is both powerful and visually captivating. Its solid gold oscillating mass and intricate finishing, including Geneva stripes and circular graining, can be admired through the sapphire glass case back, underscoring the brand’s commitment to transparency and craftsmanship.
The Portugieser collection, known for its blend of timeless elegance and contemporary innovation, introduced new design codes in 2024. Signature colors such as Horizon Blue, Dune, Silver Moon, and Obsidian were launched to symbolize the eternal cycles of day and night, paying homage to the flow of time. With this new Obsidian-colored dial, IWC continues to explore these themes, offering a bold and refined interpretation of modern horology.

For over 150 years, IWC Schaffhausen has embodied the spirit of precision engineering and creative innovation. Founded in 1868 by American watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones, the brand has maintained its reputation for producing sophisticated instrument watches and functional complications. A pioneer in the use of materials such as titanium and ceramics, IWC continues to lead the industry with advanced technologies and responsible manufacturing practices.
Sustainability remains at the heart of IWC’s philosophy. The brand sources materials responsibly and implements circular manufacturing practices that minimize environmental impact. The Portugieser Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph, limited to only 100 pieces worldwide, stands as a testament to IWC Schaffhausen’s heritage and its relentless pursuit of innovation. Marrying the timeless elegance of Armor Gold® and the Obsidian dial with the technical brilliance of the tourbillon, retrograde date, and flyback chronograph, this watch offers collectors and enthusiasts a singular expression of Swiss watchmaking excellence.
With its impeccable craftsmanship, rare complications, and enduring design, this new addition to the Portugieser collection reaffirms IWC Schaffhausen’s place among the world’s most distinguished luxury watchmakers.
