We knew we would be surprised by the novelties at Urwerk. But we didn’t know that surpsrise would measure exacly 106 x 62 x 23 mm. While the brand tried desperately hard to keep it a mystery, by placing a cloth over it, the new Urwerk UR-1001 Titan watch could barely be hidden.

Having won the Innovation and Mechanical Exception prizes at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève in 2014, the independent watch brand is turning its attention to the record books with one of the largest wrist watches ever made.

Except the UR-1001 Titan is not exactly a wrist watch. It’s the brand’s iconic UR-1001 Zeit Device pocket watch turned into one, after Urwerk received a call from a very close collector to create a strap device.

On the wrist, or on the forearm we should say, the UR-1001 Titan turns man into machine. And despite its mechnical heart, it appears like a vision of where smart wearables could go in the future.

While at first, it’s hard to imagine someone capable of wearing such a large piece of metal on the arm, the brand’s co-founer, Martin Frei, was happy to disprove that notion.

The brand has now decided to commercialize the concept with a limited edition of eight models. Once again, they will feature revolving satellite hour complication, retrograde minute indicator, day/night indicator, power reserve indicator, rotating satellite calendar, oil-change indicator, 100-year and 1,000-year indicators. Priced at CHF 380,000 the UR 1001 Titan is double the trouble.
