Luxury watchmakers Ulysse Nardin recently announced the perfect convergence of sport and style. In June, the Swiss company appointed one of the greatest pitchers in the history of baseball, Randy “The Big Unit” Johnson, as their new brand ambassador. To commemorate the occasion, the company announced the development of “The Big Unit” timepiece, which has now finally been unveiled.

At a private event in New York on October 25, Ulysse Nardin unveiled the “The Big Unit”. This new timepiece features a 45.8mm-diameter stainless steel and rubber-coated case, with a sapphire glass case back. The seconds hand bears a “Big Unit” engraving and a baseball, while the bezel bears the number 51, all in honor of Johnson. Ulysse Nardin announced that only 100 pieces of this limited-edition timepiece will be available, via select boutiques in late 2012 or early 2013.

Patrik Hoffmann, CEO of Ulysse Nardin CEO, announced the partnership with Johnson at the Diamondback Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona this summer. “Randy Johnson is a Ulysse Nardin enthusiast and is the epitome of excellence on the pitcher’s mound,” said Hoffmann. “As a company, our quest is to be exceptional, and we are thrilled to be teaming up with an American sports icon, who understands our pledge to innovative watchmaking.”

Johnson was one of the greatest pitchers ever to play the game; during his 22-year career, he won the Cy Young Award five times, achieved a total of 4,875 batter strikeouts and became a 10-time All-Star, to name a few.

“I am honored to be an ambassador for a company and brand that offers watch lovers like me perfection in quality, utility and style,” said Johnson. “I am a huge fan of Ulysse Nardin’s timepieces, and am really looking forward to wearing the limited-edition ‘The Big Unit’ watch.”
