Carbon is a material that holds no secrets anymore for Richard Mille. The brand that loves to push the envelope with its technical and material innovations has mastered it completely and utilizes it in ways that were previously thought impossible. This becomes especially clear with the two new models in the RM 07-01 Automatic collection. Here, Carbon TPT® is not only used for the case but also for the bracelet, taking not only the wearing comfort to a new height but also its style.

The first new watch in this collection combines the high-tech Carbon TPT® with red gold in the most elegant of ways. While the case middle is made from this precious metal, the back and the bezel showcase the unique pattern that results from processing the carbon. The open link bracelet unites both materials by linking one in the other. This gives the RM 07-01 Automatic the appearance of an avant-garde piece of jewelry and proves that innovative materials can be as sophisticated as they are high-tech.

The approach of the RM 07-01 Automatic Starry Night, the second new model, is slightly different. Here Mille opted to craft the bracelet entirely out of Carbon TPT®, exclusive to the ladies’ collection. It results in a bracelet that not only looks amazing but is also surprisingly light, as it weighs just 29 grams. Unique is also the diamonds incorporated into the bezel and the dial, reflecting the night sky. As Carbon TPT® cannot be shaped by hand, CNC machines cut out the space in which the diamond setters can embed the hand-polished prongs with in them a brilliant-cut diamond. This requires quite some work and craftsmanship, as the RM 07-01 Automatic Starry Night is set with no less than 181 diamonds.

The thing both watches share is their mechanical heart. While caliber CRMA2 may only show the hours and minutes, it is a thorough-bred Richard Mille movement. The caliber itself has a baseplate and bridges crafted from grade 5 titanium, which are extensively skeletonized in a technical style typical to the brand. It features a variable-geometry rotor, making it possible to adjust the watch’s automatic winding to your activity level. An often overlooked quality of this movement is that it is constructed in the same tonneau shape as the case. While common with Richard Mille, in the watch world as a whole, this is a very rare treat and yet another way in which the RM 07-01 Automatic stands out among the crowd.
