Gold prices have, in recent weeks, reached new record highs. In times of uncertainty, people tend to go back to old standards. Even before the Covid-19 pandemic, we already saw a renewed interest in gold-cased watches. This trend was, to some extent, also fueled by watch brands creating their own alloys, which gave them a unique edge in a very competitive market. Especially rose and red gold is popular, thanks to their warm shade. As this asks for copper to be added to the alloy, stabilizing this mixture of metals is a delicate matter and that’s why these three brands have made their own.

Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe
There was a time when gold for a diving watch was not done, but as taste and technology have moved forward, many brands have this type of watch now available in precious metal. Among them is Blancpain, who recently introduced a Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe in Sedna gold. Most people know Sedna gold from Omega, but as Blancpain is also part of the Swatch group, they have access to it as well. This proprietary alloy has a rich look to it, thanks to a combination of gold, copper, and platinum. Matched with a blue dial and Sedna gold bezel with blue ceramic insert is this 43mm large watch stunning above and below water. While it is even equipped with a sapphire caseback is the water-resistant still a generous 300 meters.

Rolex Daytona Rainbow

Rolex Daytona ‘Rainbow’
Nobody in the Swiss watch industry uses more gold on a yearly basis then Rolex. So it cannot be a surprise that this brand has its own foundry and proprietary alloys. Everose gold is a shade of pink gold that Rolex introduced in 2005. The alloy’s exact content is kept secret but contains at least 76% pure gold, allowing it to be certified as 18K gold. It has a warmer look to it than most commonly found in rose gold. This is also why it looks, in particular, stunning with watches like the Rolex Daytona ‘Rainbow.’ Here it serves as a splendid backdrop for the colorful gemstone setting on the bezel and dial, but of that of the brilliant-cut diamonds on the lugs as well.

Hublot Big Bang Integral King Gold
Hublot is known to push the envelope, and when it comes to gold, it is no different. With their proprietary King gold, they have created an even warmer shade than traditional 5N gold. To achieve this, more copper needed to be added to the mix, which makes stabilizing the gold so that the color doesn’t change over time, quite challenging. By adding platinum, Hublot ensures that the appeal of any of its watches in this type of gold is long-lasting. The beauty of its color has made it quite popular. It, therefore, didn’t come as a surprise when Hublot introduced their Big Bang Integral earlier this year, that also a version in full King Gold was part of the line-up.
