Baselworld 2016: Introducing The New Chopard Happy Diamonds Watch Collection

The Happy Diamonds by Chopard got even happier this year. The new version of the precious gems are prong-set to shine even brighter, and still whirl around as playfully as ever. At Baselworld, Chopard revisited the iconic timepiece in which the Happy Diamonds were first introduced in 1976.

Actually, the first Happy diamonds watch was designed for men. That first piece featured a large, cushion-shaped 18-carat white gold case, centered by a black dial, which brought to the forefront the premier floating diamonds concept. Inspired by the original shape, Chopard has now launched a watch for women. Against a textured white mother-of-pearl background, the prong-set diamonds dance playfully around the subdial, highlighting the cushion-shaped case’s gentle curves. The diamond-ringed mini subdial is where the watch hands are positioned.

In this new piece, the designers at Chopard have added more diamonds than ever before. Furthermore, the precious stones are of varying sizes, thereby accentuating their whirling dance. The rich profusion of stones in the new Chopard Happy Diamonds Watch Collection is mesmerizing. Chopard Co-President and Artistic Director Caroline Scheufele continues to surprise the brand’s connoisseurs by constantly reinventing this theme. This elegant ladies watch also comes in a round-shaped version. In any shape, it sits beautifully on the wrist. These unique dancing diamonds have been a source of inspiration for a broad range of watches, necklaces, pendants, rings and earrings.

So how was the Happy Diamonds concept born? While out on a walk in the Black Forest during the 1970s, Chopard designer Ronald Kurowski came across a waterfall and was enchanted by the thousands of tiny water droplets bursting out from it, reflecting the daylight and sparkling with all the colors of the rainbow. This vision gave birth to an idea: in order to let diamonds sparkle at their full radiance, they should be freed from their settings and allowed to circulate freely. Thus was born the Happy Diamonds concept. “Diamonds are happier when they’re free”. This led Karin Scheufele to create the first Chopard piece with moving diamonds, a Happy Diamonds watch.
