Luxury watchmakers Audemars Piguet have proudly announced that company ambassador Leo Messi has been named the best football player of 2012. Messi, who plays for Spain’s prestigious La Liga club FC Barcelona, was awarded the Ballon d’Or award by football journalists, national coaches and team captains. This marks the fourth consecutive year Messi has been named player of the year, breaking a record he jointly held with Michel Platini, Marco Van Basten and Johan Cruyff, who each won the award three times.

Messi is a top-scoring player, netting more goals than any other player in the calendar year; 79 for La Liga club FC Barcelona and 12 for the national team of his home country, Argentina. Accepting the award this week, Messi said “to tell you the truth this is really quite unbelievable, the fourth award that I have had is just too great for words”.

Audemars Piguet honored their partnership with Messi last year with the launch of the Royal Oak Chronograph Leo Messi Limited Edition, a timepiece in steel, pink gold and platinum. This Spring, the brand will auction the N°10 (Messi’s jersey number) watch of the platinum edition collection to support the Leo Messi Foundation, a charity which helps disadvantaged children around the world. The lucky buyer of the N°10 Royal Oak Chronograph Leo Messi Limited Edition will also receive one of Messi’s signed football jerseys.
