It was an exciting time in Geneva last night, as the winners of this year's Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) were announced. In a spectacular show, the entire watch world held its breath as it became clear which watches and brands would go home with a prize.

Van Cleef & Arpels has a long-standing tradition when it comes to fairies. Already in the early 1940s did the brand made clips featuring these magical figures, which represent hope and joy. One of the signature features was that a rose-cut diamond formed the head, above which a headdress further marked their magical appearance. Van Cleef & Arpels introduced these fairies on their watches in 2007 with the first Lady Féerie watch, of which now a new model is joining the collection.

Flowers have been a source of inspiration for jewelry since the beginning of time. Centuries ago, skilled goldsmiths already worked gemstones and gold into creations that resembled their natural counterparts. In watches, this is less common, because it is far more challenging to integrate the beauty of a flower within an object that is limited in its dimensions and also has another function to full fill. Of course, this didn't stop a fair amount of brands from pursuing this avenue and say it with flowers.

If there is one thing that Van Cleef & Arpels excels in, it is in creating classic watches with a twist. Even this twist is often subtle but sets the watch apart from others. An excellent example of this is the legendary 'Pierre Arpels'-model, which is essentially a very classic wristwatch, yet by fitting it with Vendome-lugs, it obtained a timeless appeal that still lasts today. The same can be said of the Midnight Heure d'Ici & Heure d'Ailleurs, yet with this watch, the twist can not only be found in its design but also in its movement.

A refined mechanical movement, preferably fitted with an exciting complication; for a long time, this was nearly non-existant within a ladies watch. A quartz-powered smaller version of a men's watch, usually with some diamonds added, was how many of them looked. But fortunately, times change, and these days there are more and more interesting ladies watches with beautiful movements, some even purposely made for them. This clear connection makes it especially in the Western part of the world very difficult for brands to sell watches set with diamonds to men, even when placed on a more masculine watch. For women diamonds are almost a must yet the way the brands incorporate them into their designs greatly differs.
