Haute watchmaker Richard Mille, due to being constantly inspired by the world of automobiles and interested in road safety, teamed up with friend Jean Todt come up with a technologically innovative watch  to make motorsport safer, the Tourbillon G Sensor RM 036 Jean Todt limited edition.

Premiering yesterday in Istanbul and the FIA awards ceremony, there will be only 15 exemplars of this outstanding titanium watch.  What makes this watch so completely different from all other chronographs on the market is its mechanism capable of interpreting the physical restraints felt by a body during rapid decelerations while driving which will make drivers be aware of dangers linked to road conditions and possibly dangerous situations.

This mechanism is a brand new complication in the horlogerie industry; it is a mechanical G-sensor. The sensor is directly assembled to the baseplate and visually displays the number of G’s (gravitational force) that a wearer will accumulate at times of rapid deceleration.  The complication measures only 17 mm but is composed of 50 parts, however it is robust and can withstand decelerations of several tens of G’s.   A good feature of this sensor is the scale that is located in the 12 o’clock position:  when the needle is in the green zone, deceleration is safe, but if it is in the red zone, deceleration is critical.

Jean Todt will be generously donating the profits of the watches’ sale to two causes he dearly believes in:  the global campaign for road safety and the charity he co-founded, the ICM Brain and Spine Institute.
