Not only does 2013 mark IWC’s Official Engineering Partnership with The Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One™ Team, it also marks the launch of The Ingenieur Automatic Carbon Performance limited edition timepiece.

This special relationship between these two prestigious teams represents the perfect combination of precision, performance and high tech engineering needed for both high performance race cars as well as the highest quality IWC timepieces.

Carbon has become an integral material used in building Formula One™ race cars.  Since the material is two times more rigid than steel and only a fifth of the weight, it’s quite obvious why carbon is the material of choice used to construct these precision racing machines. IWC chose this same material to create the case of The Ingenieur Automatic Carbon Performance. The technique involves soaking the carbon matting in resin to mold the case, then it is heated at extremely high temperatures to cure the resin and form the desired case shape and size.

The case of the IWC Ingenieur Automatic Carbon Performance measures 46 mm and houses a Calibre 80110 mechanical movement with a 44 hour power reserve. The black dial features a carbon-fiber under and over technique, to create an impressive webbed design pattern, matching that of the steering wheel found in The Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One™ race car. The dial displays hours and minutes with luminescent hands and markers along with central hacking seconds and a date display window at the 3 o’clock position on the dial.

To complete the look and feel of the Ingenieur Automatic Carbon Performance, it is available on a black rubber strap with a textile inlay and titanium pin buckle. Two different color options are also available. A yellow accented model is available, which features yellow numerals for the seconds on the dial and matching yellow stitching on the strap. A red option is also available, offering red numerals marking the seconds along with matching red stitching on the strap.

The Ingenieur Automatic Carbon Performance by IWC will be offered as a limited collection of 100 pieces in the yellow combination and 100 pieces in the red, each of which are individually numbered and engraved on the back of the case.
